The Sinking of the Royal Mail Ship Leinster

The image above shows the anchor which was recovered from the wreck of the RMS Leinster and is displayed at Dun Laoghaire as a permanent memorial to all those who lost their lives when The Leinster was sunk by a German U-Boat on the 10th of October 1918. There were 491 military personnel on board the ship when it was sunk, 339 were killed and 152 survived. Below are the details of as many of the 339 military personnel I could find. Also listed are the civilians who lost their lives in the tragedy.

First Day Cover issued by An Post to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Leinster. This one, which I got at the Leinster commemorations, is postmarked on the 10th of October 2018 and has a Dublin and Dun Laoghaire postmark.

   

This pin badge attached to a card was issued by An Post to commemorate the postal workers killed in the sinking of the RMS Leinster. Pin badge measures 20mm across attached to card measuring 85mm by 55mm.

Many of those killed have no known grave and with those who remains were recovered and do have a grave are remembered on various memorials throughout Britain and Ireland.

The remains of some of those lost in the sinking of The Leinster were interred in Deansgrange Cemetery which is only a couple of miles from Dun Laoghaire.




Arthur Henry Jeffries, Wireless Operator, Mercantile Marine S.S. "Leinster", Died on the 10th of October 1918 aged 27. Born at Cambridge. Son of Richard Jeffries; husband of Margaret Jeffries (formerly Torkington, nee Smith), of Monaster Lodge, Glenageary Rd., Kingstown.




Robert Ernest Lee, Captain, Royal Army Medical Corps. Medical Doctor, trained at Trinity College Dublin. Died aged 35. From Dublin. His younger brother Joseph Bagnall was Killed in Action in Gallipoli and is buried next to him.

Blackburne Charles Harold, Lieutenant Colonel 5th Dragoon Guards (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) attached. H.Q Staff, Dublin died on the 10/10/1918 aged 42

Received the Distinguished Service Order D.S.O., Mentioned in dispatches. Son of the late C.E. Blackburne and Mary Blackburne; husband of Emily Beatrice Blackburne. His two Children Charles Bertram ‘Peter’ aged 7 and his 11 year old sister Audrey Beatrice were lost in the same incident. Peters body was recovered and is buried with his father, the body of his daughter was never found. Their governess Rose De Pury who was with the family was also killed.

Adey  William Thomas Henworth , Second Lieutenant  Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry.  He died on the  10/10/1918  Staffordshire aged 19. He was the son of Frank Adey, of 42, Market Place, Willenhall, Staffs.

Akehurst  Ernest Gilbert  27368  Private  Scottish Horse  He died on the  10/10/1918 aged 18. He was born in Essex and the son of Mrs. L. L. Nathaniel, of 31, Hartington Rd., Walthamstow, Essex.

Aldridge  First Harry  30191  Corporal  19th Training Squadron  Royal Air Force.  He died on the  10/10/1918. Husband of Nellie Aldridge, of 5, Achilles Rd., West Hampstead, London.

Aldworth  Douglas Gilbert Hayward, Second Lieutenant  3rd Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment.  He died on the  10/10/1918 aged 19. He was born in Wiltshire and  the son of Arthur E. and E. R. Aldworth, of Laverstock Vicarage, Wilts.

Alexander  John  32636  Private  3rd Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers. He died on the  10/10/1918.

Andrew  Gavin Francis  86273  Sergeant  Canadian Field Artillery. He died on the  10/10/1918 aged   24.

Argent  Edward Harry  38967  Private  Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry He died on the  10/10/1918 aged 20. He was the son of Harry Edward and Esther Elizabeth Argent, of 59, Marlowe Rd., Wood St., Walthamstow. He was born in Walthamstow London.

Auty  Frederick  16485  Private  East Riding Yeomanry. He died on the  10/10/1918 aged 20. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Auty, of 1, Warwick Mount, Batley, Yorks. He was born in Batley, Yorks.

Baker Albert Edward 56665 Private Middlesex Hussars. Died 10/10/1918.

Ball Thomas George 77083 Private 2nd/1st Yorkshire Hussars Yeomanry. Died on the 10/10/1918. Aged 43. He was the son of Thomas and Sarah Ann Ball, of Hanley, Staffs; husband of Edith Ellen Ball, of "Almeida," Park Rd., Basford, Stoke-on-Trent.

Barnes Joseph Thomas  6784 Private 48th Battalion Australian Infantry, A.I.F. Died on the 10/10/1918 Aged 28. He was the son of David and Charlotte Barnes and husband of Muriel T. Barnes, of Henley Beach, South Australia. 

Barraclough Joseph 72238 Private Royal Defence Corps 462nd Protection Company. Died on the 10/10/1918 aged 33. Previous service with West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own).

Barradell Edward 16639 Private East Riding Yeomanry. Died 0n the 10/10/1918 aged 18. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Barradell, of 35, Oxford St., Loughborough.

Bennison William 14573 Private 1st Reserve Cavalry Regiment. Died on the 10/10/1918 aged 21. Son of John Richard and Mary Bennison, of Sunny Mount, Birkacre, Chorley, Lancs.

Bernard Thomas 30171 Private 20th Company (Tidworth) Royal Army Medical Corps. Died on the 10/10/1918 aged 39. Husband of Rosanna Bernard, of 9, St. Declan Rd., Marino, Dublin.

Billings Charles  P/13667 Lance Corporal Military Foot Police Military Police Corps  Born Sussex. Died on the 10/10/1918 Aged 48. Son of Edwin and Margaret Billings, of Chelwood Gate, Haywards Heath, Sussex. husband of Mahalia Billings, of 112, Stanford Ave., Brighton.

Birch James 49187 Private Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry. He died on the 10/10/1918.

Bishop Harry 27365 Private Scottish Horse. He died on the 10/10/1918 aged 18. He was the son of Annie Hembury (formerly Bishop), of 86, Hermitage Rd., Crewkerne, Somerset, and the late George Bishop.

Black Thomas 61418 Lance Corporal Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry. He died on the 10/10/1918.

Blackhurst Thomas 73079 Private Royal Defence Corps 468th Protection Company. He died on the 10/10/1918. Previous service with Lancashire Fusiliers (18283) He was the son of Mary Ann Blackhurst of 20 Hobson Street, off Union Street, Oldham, Lancs.

Boon Cyril Maurice 47466 Private 1st/8th Battalion Essex Regiment.  He died on the 10/10/1918 aged 18. He was the son of Edward and Annie Boon, of 77, Ellerslie Rd., Clapham Park, London.

Boughey  Anchitel Edward Fletcher  Lieutenant   8th  Battalion Rifle Brigade. He died on the  10/10/1918 aged 26. He was the son of the Rev. A. H. F. Boughey (Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge) and Katharine A. Boughey, of 4, Cranmer Rd., Cambridge.  

Bowen  James Robert  34546  Private  Lancashire Hussars. He died on the 10/10/1918.

Bowers  Joseph  77107  Private  Yorkshire Hussars Yeomanry. He died on the 10/10/1918.

Bradley  William Edward  042285  Private  15th Section Royal Army Ordnance Corps.  He died on the 10/10/1918 aged 20. He was the son of Thomas Seatle Bradley and Ruth Smith Bradley, of Main St., Hawkshead, Westmorland.

Brassington  Arthur  13935  Serjeant  3rd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment.  He died on the 10/10/1918. He was born and enlisted in Sutton-in-Ashfield Notts., lived in Grimsby. Former service with the Leic Regt 13909.

Brennan  John  27864  Serjeant  9th.  Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He died on the 10/10/1918 aged 32. He was born and lived in Portsmouth enlisted in Holborn.

Bryant  Charles  35980  Private  1st County of London Yeomanry. (Middlesex Duke of Cambridge's Hussars). He died on the 10/10/1918. He was born and enlisted in Lewisham lived in West London.

Bugg  Ernest  16641  Private  East Riding Yeomanry. He died on the 10/10/1918 aged 19. He was the son of Frederick Bugg, of 120, Lancing Rd., Sheffield. He was born enlisted and lived in Sheffield Yorks.

Burns  Digby, Captain  Royal Army Medical Corps He died on the 10/10/1918.

Burns William Robert 86504 Gunner 17th Battery  5th  Brigade  Canadian Field Artillery. Died on the 10/10/1918 aged 22. Born at St. John, New Brunswick. Son of William R. and Mary Burns, of 205, Gerrard St. East, Toronto.

Butt  Edwin  T/258649  Driver  538th H.T. Coy. Army Service Corps. He died on the   10/10/1918 aged 36. He was born in  London. He was the son of William Edwin and Eliza Butt, of Euston, London. Born in Paddington enlisted in East Ham lived in Westcliff-on-sea.

Cahill  Thomas  4275  Gunner  6th Div. Ammunition Column  Royal Field Artillery. He died on the 10/10/1918  He was born in Dublin. He was the son of Mrs. M. Cahill, of 3, Hanover Lane, Dublin.

Campbell  George Richard Colin   -   Lieutenant-Commander  Royal Navy R.N. Compass Dept. (Slough). H.M.S. "President."  He died on the  10/10/1918 aged 34. He was born in Ballyeglish, Moneymore, Co. Derry. He was the son of the Rev. Edward. F. and Lydia Campbell, of Sheskburn, Ballycastle, Co. Antrim; husband of the late Eileen Campbell (nee Knox-Browne), of Aughentaine, Fivemiletown, Co. Tyrone. Inventor of Campbell-Bennett aperiodic compass. His daughter Eileen Elizabeth Augusta aged 4 and his wife Eileen Hester Louisa nee Knox-Browne aged 32 were also killed in the sinking of the RMS Leinster.

Carew  Edward  46134  Sapper  5th Reserve Battalion  Royal Engineers. He died on the   10/10/1918 aged 28.

Carter  Edwin Johnson  2880  Private  29th Bn. Australian Infantry, A.I.F.  He died on the  10/10/1918    aged 33. He was born in Australia. He was the son of Fanny Carter, of 37, Jamieson St., Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, and the late Joseph Carter.

Colegate  Arthur Cyril  G/22773  Private  1st/6th Battalion The Royal Sussex Regiment. He died on the  10/10/1918  aged 20. He was born in Tunbridge Wells. He was the son of Alfred and Maud Alice Colgate, of 95, Silverdale Rd., Tunbridge Wells.

Conlon  Edward  35039  Private  3rd Bn. Leinster Regiment  Brackna King’s County. He was the son of Mr. P. Conlon, of Ballynoland Brackna, Rathagan, Co. Kildare.

Crichton  William  141462  Air Mechanic 2nd Class  19th Training Squadron  Royal Air Force. He died on the  10/10/1918 aged  18. He was born in Falkirk Scotland. He was the son of John Crichton, of 4, Garrison Place, Falkirk.

Crompton  F  265939  Private  The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He died on the   10/10/1918. Transferred to (493985) 653rd H.S. Employment Company Labour Corps.

Cornin  Joseph  T/424581  Private  4th Reserve H.T. Depot Army Service Corps. He died on the  10/10/1918. He was the son of Mrs. B. Cronin of Gustanella Cappamore Co. Limerick.

Cross  Robert  27386  Private  Scottish Horse. He died on the   10/10/1918 aged 18. He was the son of Robert and Ann Cross, of London.

Dean  Albert Sidney  47465  Private  1st/8th Essex Regiment. He died on the   10/10/1918 aged 19. He was the son of Albert James Dean, of 89, Histon Rd., Cambridge.

Demaine  William  242610  Serjeant  4th  Battalion The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He died on the  10/10/1918.

Dillingham  William David  18919  Private  Scottish Horse. He died on the   10/10/1918 aged 24. He was the son of Walter George and Martha Ann Dillingham, of Ampthill, Beds.; husband of Constance Dillingham (formerly Burton). An employee of Messrs. Swaffield and sons, Auctioneers. One of 5 brothers who served.

Donnelly  Owen Samuel  73106  Private  468th Protection Company Royal Defence Corps. He died on the   10/10/1918. Former service with The King's (Liverpool Regiment) (31597).

Double  Arthur Patrick  57606  Private  4th Battalion The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He died on the  10/10/1918 aged 18. He was the son of Charles Henry and Lucy Double, of  Shakespeare Rd., Fleetwood, Lancs.

Doyle  Henry Thomas  25/21  Second Lieutenant  Wellington Regiment, N.Z.E.F.  He died on the 10/10/1918 aged 28. He was born in Auckland New Zealand. He was the son of Michael and Mary Doyle, of Westfield, Otahuhu, Auckland.

Dunne  Edward R.  77770  Private  310th Protection Coy. Royal Defence Corps. He died on the   10/10/1918 aged 20. Former service with Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (3/8722) and the Royal Irish Rifles (27481). Mother Mrs R Dunne, 31 Merchant Cottages, East Wall, Dublin, Ireland

Dysart  John  19787  Private  12th Battalion The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He died on the   10/10/1918 aged 37. He was born in Coleraine Derry. Transferred to Labour Corps (464875). He was the son of Hugh and Sarah Dysart, of Coleraine; husband of Nancy Dysart, of Pate's Lane, Coleraine.

Eade  Arthur  M/4062(Dev)  Sick Berth Attendant  Royal Navy H.M.S. "Colleen"  He died on the  10/10/1918 aged 25. He was the son of Mrs. M. Eade, of the Alms-houses, Waltham Abbey, Essex.

Eddy  Samuel  25455  Corporal  Welsh Regiment Depot. He died on the   10/10/1918. He was born in  Wales. He was the son of Mary Ann Eddy of 66 Danygraig Street, Pontypridd. His brother Ernest Stanley Lewis Eddy also fell.

Elkins  Thomas  261144  Private  Middlesex Hussars. He died on the   10/10/1918 aged 36. Husband of Mabel Duncan Elkins, of 39, Byne Rd., Sydenham.

Emblein  Frederick John  18653  Private  462nd Protection Company Royal Defence Corps. He died on the 10/10/1918 aged  46. Former service with King's Shropshire Light Infantry (20721)

Evens  Charles John  63168  Private  1st Garrison Worcestershire Regiment. He died on the   10/10/1918 aged 23.

Finch  William  348  Corporal  458th Protection Company Royal Defence Corps. He died on the   10/10/1918. Former service with London Regiment (London Irish Rifles) 20051.





James Maurice Finleon 3135908, Private, 4th Bn. Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment). Died on the 10/10/1918 he was born in Canada and was 23 years old when he died.  Born at St. Augustine, Ont. Son of Thomas Finleon and the husband of Matilda Devereaux, of Auburn, Ontario.

Fishwick William Henry 49068 Serjeant 3rd Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He died on the 10/10/1918 aged 35. Son of John and Augusta Fishwick; husband of Amy Fishwick, of 12, North St., Castlefields, Shrewsbury.

Flaherty Martin 6040 Private 1st Battalion Irish Guards (Reserve Battalion). He died on the 10/10/1918 He was born in 24 Kilchreest. Son of Mrs. Kate Flaherty, of Castleboy, Ardrahan, Co. Galway.

He fought in the Boer War 1899-1901, where he was mentioned in dispatches. The mention was in respect of the manner in which Lieut. T.M. Archdale withdrew the battery waggons under heavy fire in Jan-Feb. 1900. In Sept. 1901, Captain T.M. Archdale is again mentioned for special meritorious service.He was gazetted as a Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) on 27 February 1901. He fought in the First World War.

Attwooll John Jennins aged 56 born in Dorset England living in Dublin. He was a Post Office Sorter and Telegraphist, who worked at the G.P.O., Dublin. He was working on-board RMS Leinster, in the registered mail section, when the first torpedo hit the ship. He was recorded by the only Post Office survivor, J.J. Higgins, as having survived the first explosion, which was in the Mail Room.

Daly Peter Paul. Aged 43 from Kilteely, County Limerick living in Dublin. He was married and had 3 children and was a member of Davis Hurling Club. He had been employed by the Post Office for 21 years.

Dewar John aged 35 from Scotland living in Dublin. His body was not recovered.  

Dolan John. Living at Philipsburgh Avenue, Fairview married to Jane Dolan, he had 3 children. At the time of his death, he had been working for the Post Office for 18 years.

Forbes Patrick aged 45 from Dublin. His body was not recovered. 

Hogan Michael aged 42 from Clonaslee, County Laois. His body was not recovered. 

Ledwidge John aged 50 from Dublin. He was employed as a Letter Sorter. His last known address was in Dalkey, County Dublin. He is buried in Glasnevin.

MacDonnell Alfred Thomas aged 43 from Dublin. His body was not recovered.

Maxwell William aged 43, he was from Dublin and at the time of his death his address was Connaught Street, Phibsborough, Dublin, he was married. His body was not recovered.

Murphy Patrick Peter aged 55 from Dublin. His body was not recovered.

Pasker William John Charles, aged 42 from Dublin.  He was a Post Office sorter, and was on board The Leinster, replacing a colleague who was ill. He had worked for the Post Office for 23 years. His body was recovered and he is buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery Dublin.

Patterson Richard aged 54 from Dublin. Richard was an employee of the Post Office, an Assistant Superintendent, working on board the Leinster. His body was not recovered.

Robinson Joseph G aged 43 from Killimor, County Galway living in Dublin. His body was not recovered.

Smyth Adam aged 43 from Sandycove Road, Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire), County Dublin. His body was not recovered, his is remembered on the family grave in Deansgrange Cemetery, Dublin.

Wakefield William Henry aged 35 from Newtown Forbes, County Longford, living in Dublin. His body was not recovered.

Warbrook James Alfred aged 51 from Rhode, County Offaly living in Dublin. His body was not recovered.

Civilians died as a result of the sinking of the RMS Leinster

Alexander Robert Jocelyn aged 66. He was the son of the famous hymn writer Mrs. Cecil Frances Humphreys Alexander (All Things Bright and Beautiful and Once in Royal David's City) and the Protestant Primate of All Ireland the Most Reverend Sir William Alexander. His body was recovered and he is buried in Derry City Cemetery.

Allen Mrs, Sligo. The only information available is that her name was Mrs Allen, her first name is not known, her body was recovered and identified by a relative, she is buried in Sligo Town Cemetery. 

Archer Marjorie N aged 3 years and her mother Nora (nee Desmond), London. Both bodies were recovered and are buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin. They were returning to England, having visited her family on Cork.

Baker Anthony Francis, aged 17, Waterville, Kerry. Student Telegraphist.

Bartley John Robert, aged 63, Rev. Tralee Presbyterian Church County Kerry. He was on his way to visit his seriously wounded son. His body was recovered and buried on 15th October 1918 in the Protestant Plot, near the main path, in the New Cemetery, Tralee, County Kerry. His son, Sergeant William Bartley died of wounds received in action only four days later. 

Barlow Emily E, aged 42, born Riverstown County Sligo and living at Chester, England. Her body was recovered and she was buried in Deansgrange Cemetery Dublin.

Fleming Alice aged 35, she was returning to London after visiting an aunt in Dalkey County Dublin.

Foley Thomas and his wife Charlotte. Thomas Foley was 46 years old and an official with Dublin Corporation, he and his wife had ten children. Mr. Foley was the brother in law of the famous Irish tenor John McCormack. Mrs Foley was to have gone to England the previous day but missed the boat, she was going to London to visit he brother who had been seriously injured in France.

Galvin Lena aged 26 and her sister Nora Teresa aged 20 from Tralee County Kerry.

Gould Catherine Whelan, aged 43 from Limerick and 5 of her 6 children. The Gould family had been living at Creagh Lane, Limerick. Catherine Gould was travelling to England with her 6 children to join her husband. He was a former Soldier, who was working in a Munitions Factory in England.

Hamilton Lady Alexandra Phyllis aged 42 from Grosvenor Square, London. Her Cook Margaret Bridge and a servant Ellenor Strachan travelling with her were also killed.

Howell Henrietta Alicia aged 56 from Canada, her sister Ida Wigmore Howell travelling with her on the Leinster was also killed.

Howell Ida Wigmore aged 55 from Canada, her sister Henrietta Alicia travelling with her on the Leinster was also killed.

Hynes Clare aged 24 living in Lancashire, England. She was travelling with her father to Manchester. She was travelling on the Leinster with her father James Hynes who was also killed.

Hynes James aged 64 from Tulla, County Clare. He owned a tailoring business in Manchester. His daughter Clare, travelling with him on the Leinster, was also killed.

Johnson Mary Ann from Hythe, Kent, England, returning home, following a visit to relatives in County Dublin.

Jones John Shaw aged 37 employed as a Ministry of Munitions Auditor born in Brecon, Powys, Wales living at Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England at the time. His body was not recovered.

Roberts James a Barrister from Inner Temple London, England.

Ross John. Sea Scout Commissioner of the Port of Dublin Sea Scouts and Secretary of the Howth Yacht Club, he was on his way to a Scout conference in London. He lived at 10 Conquer Hill Road, Clontarf, County Dublin.

Rowe Mary Thirgo Osmond aged 68 from Kew, Surry, England.

Ruddell Alfred aged 44. He died on the 2nd of November 1918 from Influenza and Pneumonia, he was rescued from the Leinster but died as a result of having been in the water after the sinking of the Leinster.

Saunders Frances Elizabeth nee Bailey aged 52 from York Road Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire). She was on her way to visit her ill daughter Janet Owens (nee Saunders), Janet died on the 13th of October and is buried in the same grave.

      

Her husband Francis Saunders was a member of the Lifeboat crew of the Civil Service No.1 drowned during an attempted rescue of the crew of a Russian ship the "SS. Palme", in Dublin Bay on Christmas Eve 1895, his brother George Saunders, also a member of the Lifeboat crew, drowned in the same incident. George and Francis are buried side by side in Deansgrange Cemetery, Frances Elizabeth is also buried there. George’s headstone shows the Lifeboat in rough seas while Francis’s shows the Lifeboat capsized.

“Stephen Marion” was the name engraved on a ring taken from the body of a woman recovered from the sea after the Leinster tragedy. It is assumed that Marion was her first name and she was given the ring by Stephen. The body of the woman was buried in Grangegorman Military Cemetery.*Marion Glynn was married to Stephen Joseph Glynn, Stephen Joseph Glynn, aged 50, died on the 15th of November 1907, it is possible the ring may have belonged to Marion Glynn. The body of the unknown woman and that of Marion Glynn are both recorded as having been buried at Grangegorman Military Cemetery.

Strachan Ellenor a Domestic Servant of Lady Alexandra Phyllis Hamilton who also died in the Leinster tragedy.

Thornton Helen Maud Jameson.  Daughter of William W. Jameson and Emily St. Leger Jameson, formerly O’Neill. She was married twice, and widowed twice. From Donnybrook, County Dublin and aged 61.

Vaughan Francis Samuel ‘Frank’ aged 53 a Technical Instructor from Merseyside, England.

Walsh Joseph aged 27 a Postman from Tubbercurry County Sligo.

Ward Maud Elizabeth aged 44, she was Secretary to Countess Craysfort, Glenart County Wicklow and Peterborough.

Ward Owen aged 38 Head Constable Royal Irish Constabulary Ennis County Clare.

Webb Lydia Maria aged 76 from Rotherfield Sussex England.

Wild Robert employed as Works manager G.N.R. Dundalk lived at Brook Street Dundalk.

Woodhead Elizabeth aged 30 a Shop Assistant from Grafton Street Dublin.
