Little PeterMSP34REF18237Balally, SandyfordNoAnti
He was born on the 13th of June 1895 and died on the 9th of March 1958. He was involved in the creation of arms dumps in his locality and that he took part in armed raids for gun barrel, iron and steel in Ticknock and Dundrum. Also took part in raid for gelignite and detonators at the RIC Magazine, Balally. He took part in extensive raids for arms and that he was involved in the destruction of a field kitchen and two mules at Barnaculla. The mules were later sold. Other duties and activities during the War of Independence included guard of ballot boxes; seizure of rates at Kilternan; cutting communications; ambush at White Cross at Leopardstown; attack on Cross's house for Special Intelligence Officers; destruction of enemy ambulance at Glencullen; raids for the Belfast boycott. In the Truce Period Little was in the training camp at Barnaculla and that he was in the takeover of Rathfarnham Barracks. During the Civil War he took part in an attack on National Forces at Sandyford; blocking and trenching roads, sniping at enemy posts at Clonskeagh Castle and naval base at Dún Laoghaire; laying of land mines. He was out on the night of the bridges (August 1922). Little was forced to cease activities in December 1922. He was injured while serving with the IRA in April 1921. On the 18th of April 1921 Little, who held the position of Quartermaster, B (Ticknock) Company along with five other members of the company were detailed to attack a house in Ballycorus owned by a Mr. Cross where they were to arrest an individual suspected of being a spy (Dooney or Dooning). Fire was opened and he received gunshot wound to the hip and arms. It was found by the medical board that he was suffering from neurasthenia. Patrick Brennan, late OC 2 Dublin Brigade, claims that Little suffered from a delusion that the "IRA and the B and T's [Black and Tans] are intent on shooting him and consequently he refuses to meet any of his old friends or comrades."

He became a member of H Company, 3rd Battalion, Dublin Brigade, during the period from 1 April 1917 to 31 March 1918. He transferred to B Company (Barnacullia), 6th Battalion and commanded this Company during the rest of the War of Independence, and also part of the truce period. He was involved in the usual military activities, including raids for arms, raids on post offices at Sandyford, the cutting of telegraph wires, road blocking, the burning of Ticknock military rifle range and an attack on, and attempted burning of, the house of a Mr. Cross who lived in Ballycorus, County Dublin. This last attack was due to the fact that British military Intelligence Officers apparently would visit this man's house on occasion and stay overnight, including an intelligence officer called Sergeant Dunny. He was active in the training and reorganisation of his company during part of the truce period before enlisting in the National Army on the 3rd of April 1922 at Beggar's Bush Barracks. He served in F Company, 1st Infantry Battalion, No. 2 Brigade, 2nd Eastern Division at the rank of Sergeant and was discharged from the National Army on 16 November 1923.

Smith ChristopherMSP34REF2374 c/o Mr Brennan, 50 Smithfield, Dublin NoAnti
As a 15-year-old in 1918, he was a member of the Glencullen unit of the Irish Volunteers in South County Dublin under the command of Andrew McDonnell. By 1919 he was a member of the Blackrock Company, Irish Volunteers and stored and looked after his Company’s arms and equipment in his place of employment. He let 12 members of his Company to regularly sleep in his workplace without his employer’s knowledge or consent. Attached to E Company, 6 Battalion, Dublin Brigade, IRA under the command of Mick Chadwick and Joe Flanagan he took part in a number of IRA operations and general activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: armed patrols; road blocking; arms-raids and active duty during attacks on Cabinteely Barracks, Dundrum Barracks and Dún Laoghaire Naval Base. He was arrested on the 11th of June 1921 on his way to take up position in the “Merrion Ambush”. He escaped from Mountjoy Jail, Dublin in November 1921 with Paddy Rigney; G. Davis; T. Keegan; Liam Troy and J. O'Toole. In the Truce Period he was attached to the 1 Battalion, South Dublin Brigade, IRA under the command of Tom Cassidy before being transferred in March 1922 to C Company, 2 Battalion, Dublin Brigade under the command of Tom Burke. He did full-time guard duty for two weeks at 44 Parnell Square, Dublin which was being used by General Headquarters (GHQ) staff before taking up work with the Port and Docks Board. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), during the fighting in Dublin in June/July 1922 he took part in the capture of Bridgeman’s Hotel, O’Connell Street during which one man was killed and another Volunteer Jimmy Brennan lost his arm. He also took part in the capture of the National Bank and the occupation of Healy’s public house, Marlborough Street. In July 1922, plans were made in the home of Tom Burke on North Summer Street to organise a rescue mission of IRA GHQ staff held in Mountjoy Jail. The imprisoned staff suggested tunnelling under the prison, Captain Frank Daly sourced the necessary tools and equipment for this task. From a house in Glengarriff Parade, IRA engineer Sean MacEntee stated that after 30 hours of digging, the group had “succeeded in taking up the floor of the kitchen, sinking a shaft which would have been deep enough to allow a tunnel to pass safely under the prison wall, the foundations of the house and ultimately the deep underground curtain wall”. However, it is claimed on file that the 11 IRA men were surprised and arrested by a large group of National Army forces under the command of Joseph O’Reilly who surrounded the house and street. Christopher Smith was interned in Kilmainham Jail Dublin and Gormanston Camp County Meath where he managed to escape from in September 1922. He applied and was granted a wound pension under the Army Pensions Act. He claimed for deafness and severe pains in his ears, head and throat as a result of the beating he received in Oriel House in January 1923.
